Description

Oak Tree Cottage is a small house documented in 1670, with substantial interior alterations made in the 1960s. It is likely constructed of cob and stone, with a whitewashed and rendered exterior and a thatched roof, gabled at the ends. There are end stacks, one to the main range and another projecting from the wing. The house has an “L” shaped plan; the main north/south range fronts the road and was originally two rooms wide, now with access through the left return. The rear wing was likely a kitchen wing and has been extended by a flat-roofed addition. The east front, facing the road, has two windows to each floor, featuring 20th-century three-light casements with diamond-leaded panes. The south return has a 20th-century thatched porch and similar casement windows. Internally, the partition between the original two rooms in the main range has been removed, and chamfered crossbeams remain. The roof was not inspected but may be of interest. The cottage occupies a prominent position on the main road.
