Description

The John Sheldon headstone, located immediately southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of stone and features a segmental head and shoulders. The headstone commemorates John Sheldon Esq., who died in 1808 and was noted in Whites Devon as "the celebrated professor of anatomy in the Royal Academy." It is important to note that he is not buried in the churchyard, according to information from Miss Doidge.
