Description

PLYMTREE ST 00 SE 3/124 Nos 1 and 2 Hayne Cottages - (Fordmoor Cottages on the O.S Map) GV II

Pair of cottages. Circa 1840, extensions of circa 1970. Local hard, grey limestone rubble with larger more neatly cut quoins; stone rubble stacks and divided, diagonally set chimneyshafts including a couple of original large conical chimneypots (made of plastered brick); thatch roof. Plan: pair of contemporary cottages in an L-plan block. Both have 2-room plans, with an axial stack between serving back-to-back fireplaces. Both have a doorway into the front end. No. 1 (to right) faces the road to the south. No 2 is at the right angles and faces west. 2 storeys with circa 1970 2-storey extensions on the east and north sides. Tudor Gothic style. Exterior: the windows are mostly original; they are timber mullioned and most have transoms. All have Tudor style hoodmoulds. The windows of No 2 still contain original leaded glass but most of those in No 1 have been replaced. Each front end contains an original plank door behind a thatched roofed porcn with trefoil-headed lancets each side. Above is a 2-light window. Each inner side has a 1-window front with a gable rising over the first floor window. Each wing roof is half-hipped at the front. Interiors: not inspected.
