Description

Hayne Cottages is a pair of cottages built around 1840, with extensions added around 1970. They are constructed from local hard, grey limestone rubble, featuring larger, neatly cut quoins. The cottages have stone rubble stacks and diagonally set chimney shafts, including a couple of original large conical chimney pots made of plastered brick, topped with a thatch roof.

The cottages are arranged in an L-plan block, each with a 2-room layout and an axial stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces. Both cottages have a doorway at the front end. No. 1, located on the right, faces south towards the road, while No. 2 is positioned at a right angle and faces west. The buildings are two storeys high, with the 1970 extensions added to the east and north sides, designed in the Tudor Gothic style.

The exterior features mostly original timber mullioned windows, many with transoms and Tudor style hoodmoulds. No. 2 retains original leaded glass in its windows, while most of the windows in No. 1 have been replaced. Each front end has an original plank door sheltered by a thatched roof porch, flanked by trefoil-headed lancets. Above the door is a 2-light window. The inner side of each cottage has a single-window front with a gable rising over the first-floor window, and each wing roof is half-hipped at the front. The interiors have not been inspected.
