Description
The lychgate, located 15 metres south-east of Sowton Parish Church, was built in memory of Sarah Garrett, who died in 1852. The architect is unknown, but it may have been designed by John Hayward, the Diocesan architect who designed the church, or William White, who created Bishop's Court for the Garrett family. The structure is made of Salcombe Regis stone, integrated into the coursed Heavitree churchyard wall, with a gabled-end roof constructed from heavy Salcombe Regis slabs. The roof extends down close to the height of the churchyard wall coping and features an axial Celtic cross on top. The end gables have pointed chamfered arches that lead into a short vaulted tunnel. The double timber gates are open above with trefoil-headed arches and are boarded and railed below, adorned with an iron fleur-de-lis crest. The design is striking and distinctive, showing more resemblance to White's style than to Hayward's.
