Description
This is an anonymous headstone dated 1739, located approximately 11 metres south-south-east of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton. Made of limestone, the upright slab stands about 800 mm high and features a shaped head. The flat front has a moulded frame that ends in a bifurcated scroll at the top. Below this is a winged cherub head in low relief. The inscription is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of an unnamed lady in 1739, concluding with a biblical quote. The inscription, although worn, is still legible and notably does not include a name, beginning with the words: "Here lyeth the body of her who departed this life....(etc)".
