Description

The wood headstone, located approximately 7 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, dates from the mid-18th century and commemorates Mary Wood. Made of limestone, the upright slab features a square head and stands about 900mm high. The front includes a round-headed panel that slightly bows forward, framed by a moulded surround topped with a low relief carving of a winged cherub head. Carved ribbons with tasselled ends adorn the spandrels on either side. The inscription begins with the ornamental Gothic lettering of "Here lieth," followed by the rest of the text in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, which records the death of Mary Wood, though the date is not visible.
