Description

Wayside Cross, located at the junction of the main Exeter-London road and the Ottery-Sidmouth road, is a late 19th-century memorial designed by Butterfield. It commemorates John Coleridge, Doctor of Divinity and Missionary Bishop of Melanesia, who was murdered by natives in September 1871. The memorial features a red brick square column set on a stone base, with stone panels in the center displaying texts on each face. At the top, there is a stone cap with a cross above.
