Description
Leacroft Cottage and Spinning Wheel Cottage are two cottages located on the north side of Fore Street in Otterton. They were likely built in the late 18th century to early 19th century and were modernized in the late 19th century and again around 1970. The cottages have plastered walls, which are probably made of cob on stone rubble footings, and feature a stone rubble or brick stack topped with 19th-century brick. The roofs are thatched, while the plastered brick outshots have slate roofs.
These two cottages have a similar layout, each consisting of a two-room plan that mirrors the other, with an axial stack in the party wall that serves back-to-back fireplaces. Behind the inner rooms, there are likely secondary two-storey outshots. Each cottage has a two-window front with 20th-century casements and a centrally located 20th-century door, although the fenestration is not symmetrical. The roofs are gable-ended, and the outshots also have gabled roofs. The interiors feature plain carpentry details where they are exposed. Leacroft Cottage and Spinning Wheel Cottage create an attractive group with the other listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
