Description

Cambridge Terrace is a mid-19th century terrace that retains characteristics of earlier development in Sidmouth. It comprises thirteen consecutive properties on the north side of Salcombe Road. The buildings are stucco faced, with rusticated quoins on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. They have low-pitched gable-ended slate roofs with overhanging eaves and a swagged, fretted fascia board. Each property originally had two windows, though Nos. 5, 6 and 7 have five, and Nos. 3, 8 and 9 have later superimposed bay windows to the ground and first floors. The windows are recessed sashes with later glazing and moulded or plain, shouldered surrounds, all with keystones. Drip moulds are positioned over the second-floor windows of Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. A common tent roof verandah, supported by cast iron supports and featuring wood trellis columns and balustrades, extends from Nos. 5, 6 and 7. The recessed doors are of four or six panels, some modernised, and are set within plain or moulded surrounds, with rusticated detailing on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. Nos. 8 and 9 have hoods supported on shaped brackets. Nos. 1 to 13, Cambridge Terrace, along with Nos. 1 and 2 Albany Villas, form a group.
