Description

The Bird chest tomb, located approximately 15 meters south of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1791 in memory of John Bird. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a flat lid that is moulded around the edges, along with a moulded plinth. Each corner of the tomb is adorned with bold vase-shaped square-section columns. The sides of the tomb include fielded panels framed with bead-moulding. The north side bears an inscription in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, commemorating the death of John Bird in 1791. The tomb is surrounded by a stone kerb that contains settings for iron boundary railings, which are currently missing.
