Description
The Shore chest tomb, located approximately 25 metres south of the tower of the Church of St Michael in Otterton, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1822 in memory of William Shore. Made of limestone ashlar, the chest tomb features a flat lid that is moulded around the edges and rests on a moulded plinth. Each corner has quarter round columns with moulded caps and bases. The long sides of the tomb are adorned with panels that have bead-moulded surrounds, flanked by beaded upright strips. The panels include concave corners filled with sunbursts. The north-facing panel features an inscription, with the first line in Gothic capitals and the remainder in Roman upper and lower case lettering, commemorating the death of William Shore in 1822.
