Description
Higher Abbey Farmhouse is a stone rubble house dating from the 15th or 16th century, which has been significantly restored. It features a new tiled roof with gabled ends and stands two storeys high with four bays. The building has modern casements and a central porch, along with a semi-circular stair tower at the rear and brick chimney stacks at the gable ends. The side facing the road has a projecting overhang with a thatched roof.
There is a small single-storey wing at the front on the right side, and a rear wing that forms an L-shaped plan. Inside, the farmhouse has jointed cruck trusses, a plank and martin screen in the cross passage, and stepped chamfered ceiling beams. A large open fireplace is present, featuring a chamfered bressummer and chamfered stone jambs. The ceiling is made of moulded timber, although the lateral beams have been removed. There are newel stairs located at the rear.
