Description
The building is a barn and stables located 10 metres from Sprydon House, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. It features volcanic trap random rubble construction under a gabled-end dry slate roof and is arranged in an L-shaped range. The section facing the rear of Sprydon House has chamfered angles and pyramid stops, with a gabled end that includes a blocked door and two ground floor windows: one is a late 19th-century timber casement with three lights, and the other is a smaller two-light window with a chamfered timber mullion that appears much older. Above these, there is a three-light window with eight leaded panes in each light and glazing bars, dating from the 18th century. The roof is from the 19th century. There is a local tradition that this building was once part of an earlier house. The other range contains two wagon entrances, one of which has a separately gabled timber hay-loft access above. Inside, the stables have intact early 19th-century fittings, including three stalls with boarded lower sections and simple turned uprights above, as well as a loosebox. The overall finish, both inside and out, is of a high standard.
