Description
Springhayes is a house built around 1810, with possible earlier origins. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a gabled slate roof with brick end stacks. The layout is a double-depth central stairhall plan with flanking wings. The central block is two stories high and has a three-window facade with a central entrance. This entrance has flat brick arches above three six-pane sashes. There is an early 20th-century gabled brick porch that includes a Coade stone keystone with a mask, which was taken from the original semi-circular arched doorway at the rear. The rear doorway features a moulded semi-circular arched Coade stone design with vermiculated blocks framing panelled reveals and a six-panel door. The porch is flanked by sashes with radiating heads set in recessed semi-circular arches, with a gauged brick outer arch resting on stone imposts. The flanking wings also have similar ground-floor sashes and arches. A dentilled cornice runs throughout the building. The rear elevation retains some original sashes and has a large early 20th-century extension to the east wing.
Inside, the house features reeded architraves with lions' mask corner blocks on doors and window reveals, panelled shutters and doors, and a dog-leg staircase. The main lounge showcases good decorative plasterwork. Springhayes is a well-preserved example of a small Late Georgian house, notable for its external and internal details. The Coade stone design is similar to that found on other houses from this period, particularly in Exeter.
