Description
The Old Coach House is part of a late 18th-century house, Worton House, located on the south side of Worton High Street. Worton House is a formal three-storey building constructed of red brick with thin white joints, featuring a low-pitched slate roof and brick stacks. It has a full-height canted bay on each side of the north front, with an ashlar plinth, a panelled sill band, a sill course, and a modillion cornice with a blocking course. The windows are plate glass sashes: three to each floor of the canted bays, and one to each floor in the centre, above a four-panel door. The door is within a moulded arched surround with a traceried iron and cast lead fanlight, framed by engaged Roman Doric columns, an entablature, and a pediment. Gauged brick heads feature above all windows. The west side has two windows, also with gauged brick heads, and the rear elevation three windows, with an arched head over the doorway. A long two-storey rear wing, The Old Coach House, is constructed of red brick and timber frame with imitation slates, and has various casement windows. A stable and loft are located at the south end. The front of The Old Coach House displays an exposed sill plate and some wall posts. It is believed to be a pre-existing cottage that was joined to Worton House and later extended to the south. Worton House has moulded plaster cornices to the front rooms and is said to have been built around 1789.
