Description

Magdalene Hospital, dated 1831, was designed in 1828 by Edward Blore for Lady Pembroke in the Tudor-Gothic style. This building consists of two storeys of gault brick and features a coped gabled front facing the road. To the left, there are a pair of gabled breaks, with two small stone gables above the first-floor windows at the center, and another gabled break to the right. The gables are coped and weathered, adorned with finials and kneelers.

On the first floor, there are five two-light stone mullion windows, each with moulded labels above the breaks. The ground floor has six windows, including three three-light and one two-light stone mullion window, all with moulded labels. Additionally, there are two canted bays with stone hipped roofs and four lights. The central recess is flanked by facing porches, which are also gabled and feature finials, with Tudor arch doorways that have sunk spandrels and beaded doors.

To the left, there is a 1½ storey extension with an entrance to No 22, which has a door under a moulded label. No 32 is accessed from the south-east gable end and includes two two-light stone mullion windows with moulded labels on the first floor, along with a projecting stone hipped roof bay on the ground floor that has a central doorway similar to that of No 22, flanked by windows. Above the door, there is a gabled panel with an inscribed plaque in Gothic letters stating, "This Hospital of Saint Mary Magdalen of Wilton was rebuilt on its present site in fulfillment of the intentions of George Augustus 11th Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery by Catherine his widow and sole executrix A. Dni. 1831."

The building has a slate roof with three large ridge chimneys and one diagonally shafted wall chimney with a stepped base next to No 22. There is a 3½-foot street wall made of gault brick with weathered stone capping and two sets of low gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps.
