Description
The granary and cartshed located northwest of Whaddon Grove Farmhouse dates from the 18th century. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and red brick in English garden wall bond, featuring stone dressings and a Bridgwater tile roof with gabled ends. The building has a rectangular plan, with an 8-bay open-fronted cartshed on the ground floor and a granary above, although the external stairs are missing.
The structure is two storeys high, with a symmetrical southwest front. The front features an 8-bay colonnade in antis supported by stone Tuscan columns, with the fifth column from the right replaced by a brick pier. The columns and end pilasters support a timber bressumer with a stone hand above. The first floor has a red brick front wall with rusticated quoins and three 2-light stone mullion windows with head moulding. There is a right-hand first floor doorway to the granary that has a similar architrave to the front windows, but the external stairs are missing. A stone band and plinth continue around the rendered stone end and rear walls, which have stone quoins. The rear features three blocked stone mullion windows on the first floor and a smaller single-light window on the left end.
Inside, the granary's floor is supported by chamfered cross-beams with notched run-out stops and unchamfered joists. The first floor granary has plastered wads and tie-beam trusses with queen-struts and tenoned purlin. It is reputedly built by the Long family, who were clothiers and part of the Wiltshire gentry.
