Description
Packhorse Bridge is a structure over the River Avon, built in 1725. It is made of dressed limestone and features four segmental arches of varying heights, with the second arch from the west being the tallest. The upstream side has cutwaters with stepped coped tops, while the downstream side has rectangular buttresses. There is a plat band at the level of the footway. The footway is made of cobbles and has a high plain parapet with a pitched top that flares at the approaches. This bridge is said to have been constructed as a packhorse bridge connecting Whaddon and Broughton Gifford. It was repaired by the County Council in 1856. Various graffiti can be found under the main arch, including the name G.L. Cook from 1887. This bridge is noted for being very well preserved.
