Description
The barn at Monkton Farm, located immediately north-northeast of Monkton House, dates from the late 17th century and was altered in the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble with dressed stone quoins and features a stone tile roof with gabled ends. The barn has a seven-bay layout with a central cart entrance on the northwest side. In the late 19th century, the roof over the three southwest bays was replaced, and a granary was added at this end of the barn. At the northeast end, there are stables from the 19th century with a loft above.
The northwest front displays a central cart entrance with 20th-century double doors, a loft doorway to the left, and a small window above a small opening on the right, along with lower 19th and 20th-century additions on both sides. The southeast elevation features a central doorway with a plank door, a loft door on the right, and a window on the left. The stables at the northeast end have a half-hipped roof and a small loft doorway on the northeast end wall.
Inside, the barn has a seven-bay roof supported by collar and tie-beam trusses, with two tiers of oftenoned butt purlins, curved wind-braces to the upper purlins, and intact common rafters and ridge-piece. The three bays of the roof at the southwest end were replaced with king-post trusses in the late 19th century when the granary was installed.
