Description
The cattleshed located north west of Whaddon Grove Farmhouse is possibly originally a cartshed, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later extensions from the 19th century. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a double Roman pantile roof with gabled ends. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a 6-bay open-fronted cattleshed, which may have originally served as a cartshed, to the north east. This was extended in the later 19th century by the addition of a 5-bay cattleshed at right angles to the south west.
The exterior includes a single-storey 6-bay open-fronted shed supported by timber posts that have replaced the original stone Tuscan columns. The right-hand column in antis and the end pilaster remain in place, while the other columns have been removed but are preserved on site. The rear and side walls feature an ashlar plinth and quoins, and the south east end gable has a stone stringcourse. The left bay of the front colonnade is now connected to the later 19th-century cattleshed, which has stone square piers, with some open bays partially filled in by low stone rubble walls.
Inside, the original north east range retains its late 18th-century or early 19th-century tie-beam roof structure with raking queen-struts, while the south west range has a later 19th-century king-post roof. This structure is reputedly built for the Long family, who were clothiers and members of the Wiltshire gentry.
