Description
The stables at Andover House are a late 18th-century structure, likely built between 1772 and 1776 by the younger Matthew Brettingham while he was working on the mansion. The building features squared and coursed rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins and stone dressings. The roofs are hipped, with the south-west roof covered in stone slates, while the north-west and north-east roofs are covered with concrete tiles.
The stables form four sides of a courtyard, with the south-east range serving as the rear wall of Andover House and the Estate Office. All sides except the south-east have round-arched, pedimented entrances, although the entrance on the north-west side is blocked. The inner courtyard walls display round-arched arcading, which is blocked on all sides except for the north-west, where there are two-leaf plank doors leading to the stables. Diocletian windows are present in the arcading across all ranges. A bell turret sits on the ridge of the south-east wing, square in plan with an open top and pyramidal cap, featuring clocks on the south-east and north-west faces.
