Description

Andover House and Estate Office is a house and estate offices built in the late 18th century, possibly between 1772 and 1776 by the younger Matthew Brettingham while he was working on the mansion nearby. The building is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins, stone dressings, and hipped stone slate roofs, featuring stone ridge stacks, some of which have been renewed. It is a U-shaped block with two storeys, containing offices on the left and Andover House on the right and in the centre. The rear wall of the central wing forms the south-east range of the stable courtyard.

The windows include cross-mullioned wooden casements and French windows on the ground floor, with 2-light casements above, all set in blocked stone surrounds. The north-east front of Andover House showcases an early 19th-century Gothick facade with 2-light pointed-headed windows featuring 'Y' tracery on the ground floor and quatrefoil windows above. There is a moulded cornice and a blocking course at the parapet. A 20th-century porch is located in the angle with the stable range. Additionally, there is a bell turret on the ridge of the centre wing, which is square in plan with an open top and pyramidal cap, and clocks on the south-east and north-west faces.
