Description
The Corsham War Memorial is a cenotaph built in 1921, made of dressed Bath stone. It features a three-stepped square base and plinth. The front and side faces of the cenotaph have moulded panels adorned with a wreath detail. Above these panels is a band inscribed with the words "DUTY NOBLY DONE." At the top, there are bronze eagle wings on the front and bronze crossed rifles and a helmet on the sides. The front panel bears the inscription: "THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF CORSHAM TO BE A PERMANENT TOKEN OF THEIR GRATITUDE TO ALL WHO DIED FOR THEM IN THE WAR OF 1914 - 1918 AND ESPECIALLY THE MEN OF CORSHAM NAMED HEREON." The plinth below is inscribed: "ALSO THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 AND IN OTHER THEATRES OF WAR." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the panels and plinth on the sides. The cenotaph is located next to a memorial garden.
