Description

The Priest's House is a house dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, with 20th-century additions. It is constructed of brick and sarsen, likely replacing earlier timber framing. The building has one storey and an attic, consisting of three bays with a right outbuilding that now serves as a kitchen, along with a front extension added around 1950. The original layout likely featured a central open hall with services located in a narrower bay to the right, beyond a cross passage. The left bay was rebuilt in the 16th or 17th century and is approximately one third narrower than the original. The house features timber casement windows, metal windows, and an angled door in the front extension, which has a flat roof. The thatch over the right outbuilding has been reduced in height.

Inside, the structure includes a cruck truss to the left of the cross passage, with a saddle apex built up to the ridge and a rear cruck descending to the ground. A tie beam was removed to insert a stack in the later 16th or 17th century, made of stone with 60mm bricks for the flue and a simple chamfered firebeam. Later work was done from the rear. A wattle and daub wall to the right of the cross passage was removed below the tie, which has soffite mortices for a central door. The purlins are trenched without visible windbraces. In the former hall, there is a fine moulded ceiling with double moulded chamfers on the spine beam and joists. A building on this site is recorded as belonging to the priest in 1520, and the vicarage was formerly located on an adjoining plot.
