Description

Rose Cottage is a farmhouse dating from around 1650 to 1700. It features chalkstone on brick and sarsen sill walls, topped with a tiled roof. The building is two stories high with an attic and consists of three bays, with a lobby entry and a single rear bay that was later extended by an additional bay. There is also a two-story, two-bay brick addition from the early 19th century located in the left re-entrant angle. The central door is a 19th-century six-panel design, with the upper four panels glazed, set within a 20th-century porch.

The cottage has 16-pane sash windows that have replaced the original stone mullioned windows, although two of these original windows remain on the left gable, featuring chamfered edges and label moulds. The rear wing includes three-light timber windows and 17th-century iron casements with catches. The roof has a central stack with four flues and is quarter-hipped to the left.

Inside, the front rooms boast plaster cornices, fielded panelling, moulded fire surrounds, and a bolection panel above the fireplace. The right room has recessed cupboards, one of which has shaped shelves, and there are some 17th-century moulded doors. An early 18th-century door has been refixed in the kitchen. The spine beams have notched ogee stops, and the roof features two tiers of straight windbraces supporting the butt purlins. During modernization in 1984, a fireback was revealed, displaying a fleur-de-lys and the date I.B. 1700. In front of the house, there is a sarsen cobble path and a mounting block.
