Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at 48 Market Place (formerly Blue Boar Row), is a mid to late 19th century repainting of an 18th century building. It features two storeys and an attic with an ashlar front. The ground floor has a bracketed stone cornice, while the main cornice is moulded and breaks forward over the first floor windows, which are set against a plain frieze. The balustraded parapet is interrupted by four dormers framed in stone pilasters with heavy segmental pediments and round-headed sash windows. The first floor has four windows, each situated in slightly projecting bays. The ground floor was altered around 1900, likely changing the entire front, and is now articulated by five broad Doric pilasters on a plinth, with modern plate glass windows and a door. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 41 to 44, the Blue Boar Inn, and Nos 45 to 51.
