Description

Ox Barn is a detached cottage dating from the late 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone and Flemish bond brick, topped with a thatched roof that has a half-hip on the right side and features brick stacks. It is a single-storey structure with an attic and has a two-window south front, with the entrance located on the left return. The central area has French windows, while the right side features a two-light segmental-headed casement and the left side has a three-light casement. The full gabled attic dormer on the right includes a two-light casement, and the right half of the front has been refronted in 18th-century brick. The left return has been rebuilt in brick and includes a thatched porch, with a two-light casement to the right and a three-light casement on the first floor. The right return has a 20th-century extension, and the rear of the building is windowless. Inside, there is a very deep chamfered beam with bar stops, exposed joists, and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel set on chamfered stone jambs. The doors are planked with strap hinges. The cottage may have originally been timber-framed and single-cell, later extended in rubble stone to the west and refronted in brick in the late 18th century.
