Description

Zion Hill Chapel and Schoolroom is a Congregational chapel that is now no longer in use. It was built in 1726, as indicated by the wrought iron weathervane. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a pyramidal tiled roof. It is square in shape and consists of a single storey with two windows. The central entrance has double panelled doors topped by a semi-circular fanlight, which is set in a chamfered stone surround with a keystone and an arched hood supported by brackets. There are cross windows on either side with round-arched lights. The steeply pitched roof has a coved eaves cornice and a weathervane at the apex, along with two octagonal vents at the rear.

On the right side of the building, there are two recessed chamfered mullioned casements. The left side features a blocked chamfered doorway and two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements. The rear of the chapel has two cross windows with square-headed lights. Inside, there is a gallery on the south and east sides, which includes fielded panelling, pilasters, and a ramped moulded handrail at the front, supported by cast iron columns. The interior also contains four-panelled doors and a late Victorian fireplace surround. There are three black marble wall tablets commemorating Rev John Morgan, who died in 1796, Rev William Moore, who died in 1798, and Rev John Rogers, who died in 1815. The congregation of this chapel later constructed a larger chapel on Cuff's Lane in 1842.
