Description
The building is a barn with a horse engine shed located at Manor Farm, dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone and features a Welsh slate roof. The barn consists of seven bays and has opposing central double planked doors with segmental heads and keystones. To the right, there are two tiers of two round-headed slit vents. The polygonal horse engine shed, which is weatherboarded, has iron columns supporting its roof and is attached to an octagonal red brick stack with a moulded stone capping. This stack replaced the horse-driven threshing machine with steam power.
On the left and right sides, there are segmental-headed planked doors for loading at both the ground and upper levels. The rear of the barn is similar to the front but features low double planked doors to the right of the central doors and additional slit vents. Inside, the barn has a seven-bay queen-strut truss roof, and some of the belt-driven iron wheels from the threshing machine are retained along the south wall. This barn is a good example of the transition from horse to steam power in agricultural buildings. It was built as one of a pair of barns, with a matching barn located to the west at Manor Farm.
