Description

The stables and shelter shed at Manor Farm, located in Steeple Ashton, date from the late 17th century, with the shelter shed added in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of random rubble stone with stone slate hipped roofs for the stables, while the 7-bay shelter shed, which is built at right angles to the stables, is made of Flemish bond brick and features a Bridgwater tiled roof.

The single-storey square stable to the north has a large segmental-headed opening without a door on the west side, with bull's eye windows on either side. Above this is a planked loft door, and there is a square-headed opening with flanking bull's eyes and a loft door on the east side. A concrete block lean-to has been added to the north.

A short single-storey stable connects the northern and southern stables, featuring a planked door on the east and two bull's eye windows on the west, along with a continuously chamfered plinth. The south stable, which was formerly a dovecote, has a planked stable door on the west side and blocked openings at the rear; its cupola was removed in the 1960s. The attached shelter shed has a 7-bay open front that faces the stock yard on the south side.

Inside the former dovecote, stone pigeon boxes line the walls, while the stable on the north side has wooden mangers along the walls, indicating it has likely always been used as a stable. Both units are currently used for rearing calves.
