Description
The granary at The Manor House is a late 17th-century structure located in Steeple Ashton. It features unusual Flemish bond brickwork, with two headers between each stretcher, and stone dressings. The roof is made of stone slate and has coped verges. This single-storey building with a loft has three windows and is supported by twelve cylindrical stone columns.
Access to the granary is via a planked door set in a cyma-moulded architrave, reached by stone steps on the east gable. Both the front and rear walls have three 2-light cyma-mullioned casements. The west gable includes two 2-light mullioned casements on the main floor and one on the loft, with moulded stone string courses above the lintels of each floor.
Inside, the main floor features chamfered beams with ogee stops and a winding staircase in the southeast corner leading up to the loft. The roof structure consists of a 3-bay collar truss with two tiers of chamfered purlins. This granary is noted for its decorative design.
