Description
These are a pair of early 17th-century cottages located on Church Street, Steeple Ashton. The cottages are timber-framed with brick nogging, and have a Bridgwater tiled roof. A stone and brick stack is on the left, and a brick stack is located to the right of the centre. The front has three bays, with two windows on each floor. There are two planked doors with gabled canopies on the left, and a two-light or three-light casement window to the right of each door. The first floor also has a two-light and a three-light casement window. The left return side features a large external stone stack with offsets, and a two-light casement window on the ground floor to the right. The right return side has been rebuilt using English garden wall bond brick, with two-light and three-light casements on both floors. The rear has a two-storey wing with a lean-to on the right, and a weatherboarded addition on the left.
The interior of No. 1 cottage contains deep chamfered beams with stepped stops, exposed joists, and a former external timber-framed wall that retains a four-light diamond-mullioned window on the ground floor and a two-light window above it. There is also a first-floor Tudor-arched stone fireplace and timber-framed partitions with wattle and daub panels. The roof dates from the 19th century. As of February 1987, No. 1 cottage was undergoing renovation.
