Description
Lavender Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which was rebuilt in the mid-18th century. Originally timber framed, the outer walls have been rebuilt in brick on the front and right-hand gable, and in stone rubble, mostly flint, with quoins. The house features a thatched roof and brick chimney stacks. The main block consists of four bays and was originally open to the roof; it is now one-and-a-half storeys high.
There is a two-storey rear addition with an attic, built in the mid-18th century, at the same time as the outer walls were reconstructed in stone. The entrance is located in the second bay from the right, accessed through a six-panelled door beneath a simple gabled hood. The front has four windows—one to the right and two to the left—featuring 20th-century two-light timber casements with glazing bars, set in openings that have been widened to fit them, all under original segmental heads.
To the left, there is a hipped dormer with a three-light casement and glazing bars, and a large gabled dormer over the next bay with a similar window. The roof is half-hipped at both ends, and there is a cruciform ridge stack above the front door. The original small panel timber framing is now limited to three cross walls, built from relatively short interlocking studs and rails, which do not have continuous tie beams. The principal rafters extend only to the level of the upper collar, forming truncated upper crucks. The chimney stack is exceptionally large, with a smoking chamber accessed from a door on the upper floor, replacing a smoke bay in the same position. Inside, there is a small 18th-century staircase with column-on-vase balusters.
