Description

The Old House is a house dating from the 17th century, with substantial reconstruction around 1690 and in the early 19th century. It was likely originally a small cottage against the road, with a lobby-entry building attached at right angles, the latter now forming the main elevation. The house is built of colourwashed brick, with a thatched roof. It is two storeys high and has four bays. An entrance is sheltered by a thatched porch in the third bay, opposite a chimney stack. The first floor has nine-pane single-hung tripartite sash windows, while the ground floor has 20th-century metal windows. A kitchen extension is located at the rear, as is a late 17th or early 18th-century outbuilding and a rear entrance accessed via a glazed corridor. An ovolo-moulded window is visible at first-floor level on the rear elevation. Inside, the house features a chalkstone stack, and a staircase in the centre bay of the wing facing the road, dating from around 1820-40. The original roof, of a lower pitch, is enclosed within a later roof, with rafters that show signs of smoke blackening. The ground floor has chamfered spine beams.
