Description

The Old Vicarage is a former vicarage built around 1840 by James Thomson for Joseph Neeld of Grittleton. It features squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs. The building is two storeys high and designed in a picturesque Tudor style, with flush stone-mullion windows and round-headed lights on the casements. The symmetrical north front has three windows, a raised plinth, a first-floor string, and the upper floor slightly set back.

A centre projecting porch gable has walling that is also slightly projected, with two-light windows on each side. The lower windows have deep bead-moulded hoodmoulds. The porch bay includes a Tudor-arched entry and hoodmould, an ashlar upper floor, and a canted oriel with narrow sidelights. There are panels below the lights, with the front panel featuring a blank shield.

The west end has a stack, while the east end showcases a large square ashlar bay, with the stone roof linked to a small first-floor oriel. The parallel rear range includes a large added bay and oriel at the east end, and a west end stack with a two-light window on each floor in the chimney projection. A large mullion and transom stair-light is positioned between the two west gables. There is a smaller parallel gable to the right and a single-storey outbuilding that connects to a Bridgwater-tiled stable and coach-house. According to J. Thomson's unpublished work from 1845, the house was described as a parsonage for a moderate incumbency, containing two parlours, a study, two bedrooms, a kitchen, offices, a chaise-house, and stables.
