Description

New Farm Cottages is a pair of estate cottages built around 1832 by J. Thomson for J. Neeld of Grittleton. They are constructed from squared rubble stone and feature a slate eaves roof with a central ridge stack. The cottages are designed in a T-plan and stand one and a half storeys tall. They have a raised plinth and unmoulded small mullion windows with small-paned casements. The advanced centre gable includes two-light windows on each floor, with doors to the main range on either side. Originally, there were hipped slate open porches at the angles of the centre projection, but the porch on the right has been removed and the door altered to a window. These cottages are one of the estate buildings designed by Thomson during the reconstruction of Alderton village from 1831 to 1832 and are illustrated in his unpublished work, History of the Church and Village of Alderton, from 1845. They are included as a relatively unaltered example of this architectural style.
