Description
Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1676, which was extended in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features an imitation stone slate roof with two diagonally-shafted ashlar ridge stacks. The building is 2½ storeys tall and originally had a symmetrical double-gabled front with three windows, showcasing ovolo-moulded mullion windows and hoodmoulds. A matching third gable was added in the mid-19th century. The original range includes an attic with 2-light windows, a first floor with 3-light windows on each side and a 2-light window in the center, and a ground floor with a 4-light window featuring a king-mullion on each side of a door set in a flush moulded doorcase.
Around 1830-1840, a porch was added by J. Thomson, which is a lean-to design with a shallow open pedimental gable and a ball finial. The outer piers are made of ashlar and are chamfered, with unique swollen caps. The 19th-century barge boards enhance the structure. The added gable on the right has similar attic and first floor windows and barge boards. The rear of the farmhouse features four gables that step forward from right to left, with the left gable dating from the 19th century and the right gable obscured by an added rear wing. Manor Farm is depicted in J. Thomson's unpublished 1845 History of the Church and Village of Alderton, showing the barge boards and porch but without the added gable.
