Group Of Three Monuments In Churchyard About 3 Metres South West Of Porch Of Church Of St Martin

This description covers a group of three chest tombs located in the churchyard about 3 meters southwest of the porch of the Church of St Martin in Bremhill Village. These monuments date from the 18th century and are made of ashlar stone.

The first tomb, located to the northwest, is an unidentified mid-18th century monument featuring a large oval plaque on the south side adorned with scroll decorations. It has two raised shaped plaques on the north side, set on a decorated ground, with scroll decorations on the center and angle piers. The east end includes floral drops to the piers, and the south side has an inscription, partially buried, dedicated to William, son of William.

The second tomb is situated about 1 meter southeast of the first. This unidentified mid-18th century monument has two shield plaques on each side, fielded angle piers, and a decorated pier typically placed adjoining the left angle pier on both sides. It features a moulded base and cornice, with inscriptions commemorating a wife of Peter Lane, who died in 1741, and Peter Lane himself, who died in 1748.

The third tomb, known as the T. Wiltshire monument, is located about 1 meter south of the second. This mid-18th century monument also has two shield plaques on each side, fluted piers at the center and angles, a moulded base, and a pulvinated frieze that breaks forward over the piers. The south side features a scroll-decorated center pier and an inscription dedicated to Thomas Wiltshire, who died in 1852.
