Description
This is a group of three chest tombs made of ashlar stone, dating from the 18th century, located towards the south side of a disused churchyard. The first tomb, an unidentified memorial from the mid-18th century, features two raised octagonal plaques on each side, with fielded panelled piers at the angles and center, adorned with center rosettes. It has a moulded base and cornice, with a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over the piers. The second tomb is the Tilly memorial, also from the mid-18th century, and is nearly identical to the first, with an inscription dedicated to John Tilly Jr. The third tomb, an unidentified memorial from the early 18th century, has two shield plaques on each side, with scroll ornamentation at the center and angle piers. It also features a moulded base and cornice, with a frieze broken forward over the piers and cartouches at each end. This monument is sunken and partly dismantled as of 1986. These tombs are situated in the churchyard of the former Church of St James, which was demolished in 1880.
