Description
Tilted Lodge is an estate cottage built around 1800 by J. Bradie for Joshua Smith of Erlestoke Park. It is constructed from squared rubble stone and features a thatched pyramid roof with a corniced central stack. This picturesque one-storey cottage has Gothic details and an unusual layout. The front wall is canted on each side, projecting towards the center, which features a semi-circular bow. The bow has double doors with a pointed arch, flanked by two pointed stone windows with Y-tracery, all three of which have linked hoodmoulds. Each canted wall also has a 2-light Y-tracery pointed window with a hoodmould. To the left, a low link connects to a 20th-century addition that matches the original design and has two pointed windows and a half-hipped thatched roof. A design by John Bradie from 1800 is located in the Cooper Union Museum in New York.
