Description

This is an early 19th-century estate cottage of rubble stone construction, featuring a plain tile eaves roof and a central chimney stack. It is built in a picturesque cottage style with a cross plan. The corners are emphasised with flush ashlar quoins. The front gable faces the road and includes a pair of first-floor casement windows with stone voussoirs and a keystone, and a small ground-floor oriel window with a moulded stone head and base. The windows have renewed 1-2-1 pane casements. Inset above the oriel is a piece of 15th-century carved stonework displaying four identical coats of arms within large quatrefoils. The west gable features a door with a renewed cambered head and a casement window above. The cottage is part of the Erlestoke Park estate and is one of several embellished with fragments of carved stonework. It was likely built for G. Watson-Taylor, who owned the estate from 1819 to 1832.
