Description
No. 42 High Street is an early 19th-century cottage made of painted brick with a plain tile roof that is hipped at the rear and features a ridge stack. This one and a half storey building is designed in a picturesque style, showcasing an ornamented gable end facing the road. It has pierced bargeboards and a pendant, along with a stone band. The center of the cottage projects outward, featuring a broad arched-headed triple casement window on the first floor, supported by a reused carved medieval corbel below. The central door is flanked by small arched-headed windows that have leaded iron casements and intersecting-tracery heads. Above the door, there are reused 17th-century grotesque carvings. The side walls are constructed of rubble stone. This cottage is part of a series of estate cottages from Erlestoke Park, which are embellished with various carved fragments.
