Description
A group of three chest tombs from the 18th century is located in the churchyard south of the south aisle of the Church of St Martin in Bremhill.
The first tomb, known as the Spackman monument, dates to the late 18th century and features baluster angles and large bordered rectangular plaques on each side. It has a moulded base and capstone, with an inscription at the east end dedicated to Jacob Spackman.
The second tomb is the Brome monument, which is adjacent to the Spackman monument and dates to the early 18th century. It also has a moulded base and capstone, squat baluster angles, and an armorial design on the west end. The finely lettered inscription on the north side commemorates Ralph Brome, who died in 1716, while the south side inscription acknowledges his benefactions.
The third tomb, the Broome monument, is located to the east of the Brome monument and dates to the mid-18th century. It shares a similar style with a moulded base and capstone, as well as baluster angles. The south plaque is scroll bordered and flanked by trumpeting putti on pedestals, with an inscription dedicated to Ralph Broome of Nutthills. The north inscription reads: 'Beneath this tomb the mortal part doth lie Of him who did all Nations base defie Just and upright he was to every man And never failed to lend a helping hand Unto the poor from round about's abode He fed the hungry and the naked clothed For such good deeds our Blessed Lord doth say That he the giver will most surely pay'.
