Description

Three monuments are located in the churchyard north of the chancel of the Church of St Martin in Bremhill. These three chest tombs date from the 18th century and around 1830, constructed from ashlar stone.

Starting from the east, the first is the Woodward monument, situated about 3 meters north of the chancel and dating to around 1830. It is designed in a neo-Grec style, featuring a cross-ridge cap and antefixae at the corners. The pediments have rings, and there are raised angle piers with arch-headed panels adorned with low-relief husk drops, highlighted in black. Each side has two plaques framed with black borders and concave rebated angles, commemorating G. Woodward, who died in 1828.

The second monument, located about 2 meters north of the Woodward monument, is an unidentified chest tomb from the mid-18th century. It has two raised shield plaques on each side, with Roman Doric fluted columns at the center and corners. The base and cornice are moulded, featuring a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over the columns, and there are finely carved scrolls at each end.

The third monument, known as the Pill monument, is about 3 meters west of the second and dates from the early 19th century. It has reeded rounded angles and a ridged capstone. The plaques on the north side feature a draped urn between them, while those on the south side have drapery drops between. This monument commemorates J. Pill, who died in 1842.
