Description

The Old School is a former village school that has been converted into a house and sculptor's studio. It was built in 1851, with additions and alterations made in 1893 and later. The building features squared and coursed rubble with brick and stone dressings, topped with a stone slate roof on the main range. The later rear addition is constructed of brick, while a 20th-century southeast addition has a double Roman tile roof.

The structure consists of a long four-bay range that runs parallel to the road, with additional sections at the rear and northeast. The northwest front showcases three cambered-arched windows with timber cross-mullion fenestration and leaded octagonal glazing. To the right, there is a timber porch featuring a carved bressumer adorned with oak leaves and acorns, along with an archway that bears the inscription: 'COME/YE/CHILDREN/AND/HEARKEN/UNTO/ME/I/WILL/TEACH/YOU/THE/FEAR/OF/THE/LORD'. The porch also includes a Tudor-arched plank door fitted with fine Celtic-style hinges.

A central lateral brick stack, accented with stone dressings and bricks laid in a herringbone bond, is present on the building. At the right gable apex, there is a bell turret capped with a lead pyramidal roof. The southwest wall beneath the turret features leaf carving along with the initials 'RP/CHP/LSW'. The Old School exemplifies the Arts and Crafts embellishments made by the Pollen family to several buildings in Rodbourne.
