Description
Fovant House is a rectory that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the 17th century but was rebuilt in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof with gable end stone stacks that have moulded cappings and coped verges. It is designed in an L-shape and has two storeys with a symmetrical front that includes five windows. The central door has six fielded panels and is topped by a semi-circular fanlight within a pedimented porch supported by engaged Tuscan columns. There are 12-pane sash windows on either side of the door.
On the first floor, there is a central Venetian window with sashes, flanked by 12-pane sashes. The left side of the building features French windows with a transom light, and there is a 20th-century 12-pane sash window on the first floor. To the left, a two-storey rear wing has 2-light and 3-light casements with a hipped roof. The right side of the building is windowless, but there is a two-storey rear wing to the right that has casements. This rear wing consists of two parallel ranges, with the longer range on the left featuring casements and one 3-light mullioned casement with elliptical-headed lights and cusped spandrels.
The interior was partly inaccessible during the survey in April 1986, but the front range from the late 18th century includes doors with six fielded panels set in moulded architraves. The rear stair hall features fluted pilasters, an open well staircase with cast-iron rod balusters, and a wreathed handrail.
