Description
21 Mill Street is a late 17th-century house located in Calne. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, which was formerly rendered, and features a left-hand brick stack and a pantile roof. The house has a two-room parallel plan with rear additions and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range. The central doorway is framed in heavy timber and has a three-plank door. Above it are timber lintels supporting three-light timber mullion windows and casements with a horizontal bar. At the rear, there is a central door, a four-light attic window, and a 19th-century gable dormer. The right-hand gable includes a three-light timber mullion window, likely from a former staircase. Inside, the property features a through-passage with chamfered axial beams that have roll stops, large fireplaces, and on the first floor, a bressumer with stone cheeks. An inserted right-hand stair leads to the attic, which has a collar truss roof and tenoned purlins.
