Description

Grange Cottage is a late 17th-century house located on Church Street, Kingham. The building was altered with the raising of the eaves and minor additions at a later date. It is constructed from roughly coursed and banded limestone and marlstone rubble, with alternating angle quoins, and is roofed with stone slates. The house follows a central-passage plan and has two storeys with a gable-lit attic. A roughly central four-panel door, with the top panels now glazed, is sheltered by a bracketed flat stone hood. Chamfered mullion windows with dripstones, mostly of three lights, are positioned to either side of the door. A ridge stack to the right of the entrance has dripstones and paired, rebated shafts with a moulded capping. A rendered integral end stack has been inserted to the left. A lean-to section to the left gable end may be original (as indicated by the lack of a straight joint), and a 19th-century lean-to extends to the rear on the right side. During a partial inspection in August 1987, ground-floor rooms were found to have chamfered ceiling beams.
