Description

Bentleys is a house dating from the mid-to-late 17th century, with some minor later additions and alterations. It is constructed of roughly coursed and banded limestone and marlstone rubble, topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring a two-window front. The windows are three-light chamfered mullion style with leaded lights and dripstones, except for a segmental-headed 20th-century French casement window located in the lower left. There are 19th-century gabled dormers on both sides of the roof slope. The integral end stacks have been rebuilt in red brick above the dripstones, and earlier roof pitches can be seen at the gable ends. All the casements are located on the back wall.

Inside, the left ground-floor room includes a deep-chamfered spine beam with stepped ogee stops and joists. There is an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wood lintel, which has a bread oven to the right, now illuminated by a small paired lancet window that is said to have been brought from Kingham Manor House, which was demolished in the 1920s. A plank door on the left leads to an oak winder staircase that continues up to the attic. The first-floor rooms feature chamfered ceiling beams. The attic has a double butt-purlin roof in three bays, with a collar truss on the left and a vertical stud partition on the right, which was plastered over at the time of the last survey in August 1987. The purlins in the attic are also chamfered.
