Description
This is a house located in Aldbourne, likely divided into separate units, dating from the late 17th century with later alterations. It is constructed from roughly coursed limestone and marlstone rubble, featuring alternating angle quoins, and has a concrete tile roof with coped verges. The building has two storeys and an attic.
The windows include 20th-century metal casements positioned directly below the eaves on the center and right sides, along with three earlier segmental-headed windows on the ground floor, two of which are located where doorways have been infilled. To the left, there is a larger 20th-century casement with contemporary flat-roofed eaves dormers directly above. The building has ridge stacks on both the left and right of the center, which have been rebuilt in concrete above dripstones.
Inside, there are chamfered cross beams with stepped ogee stops in two ground-floor rooms on the right. The room between the stacks features a stone-flag floor and a carved stone pillar supporting a beam at the back wall. There are large chimney breasts with infilled inglenook fireplaces; the right side has the position of an oak winder staircase that still survives from the first floor to the attic. On the first floor, one of the casements in the back wall has a carved chevron decoration on its wood lintel, and the ceiling beams are chamfered, with one serving as a tie beam to the principal rafters of the single butt-purlin roof. This building is included for its group value.
